St.
Mary's Church is situated on the Staveley Road of Pune. It is considered
to be one of the oldest protestant churches in the city and was
consecrated by Bishop Heber. Pune St. Mary's Church was built mainly for
the officers and soldiers of the British, along with their families, in
the year 1825. One of the major attractions of the church is its Gothic
style of architecture. Originally St. Mary's Church was adorned with a
huge and magnificent steeple. Later, in 1982, the original steeple was
replaced by shorter concrete one.
In 1874, stained glass was fitted at the altar and near the baptistery,
in the memory of Lieutenant Trotter. The stained glass was fabricated in
London and cost approximately 200 pounds. One can see some rare
regimental flags inside the Saint Mary Church of Poona, India. The
interiors of the church also boast of a memorial plaque in memory of
Colonel William Morris, one of the survivors of the Battle of Balaclava.
St. Marys Church of Pune is the perfect for those interested in the
history of the city.
